One Green Route
One Green Route was established in 2004 by the regional development agency One North East in conjunction with the member companies and organisations in NorthEast Biofuels cluster. Its aim is to establish a network of independent garages throughout the region selling a renewable fuel and to link this network with the regions tourist attractions, in order to promote environmentally friendly touring for residents in and visitors to the region. Since its inception, the network has grown to now include 20 forecourts, each selling a branded biofuel. These fuels are provided by a range of suppliers, leaving the forecourt owner flexibility in sourcing the fuel. However, because of the strong links between industry and agriculture formed within NorthEast Biofuels, the region has continued to develop routes to enable crops grown in the region, to be processed into biofuels within the region and used by motorists within the region. This seed to tank mentality helps deliver local economic and global environmental benefit. It fits with the think global act local approach for environmental improvements established internationally and is intended to help the region develop into a world leading area for growing, processing and using biofuels.
